With nearly 260km of coastline, the Algarve has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, many of which are “blue flag” designated. Many are within a short drive of the villa.

The colour of the flags will tell you whether or not it is safe to swim in the water of if the beach is being attended by a lifeguard.

Beach Armacao de Pera

Praia da Armação de Pera

The nearest beach to Jardins de Pera is approximately 3km away in Armação de Pera. Praia da Armacao de Pera is a very long sandy beach, which seems to go on miles. There is an abundance of outdoor cafes, shops, restaurants and a promenade.

Walking takes approximately 30-35mins and is a pleasant walk through the traditional village of Pera and the country road to Armacao de Pera. The beach is only a 5 minutes drive from the Jardins de Pera.

Praia Grande

Heading east along Praia da Armacao de Pera after the old fishing village you’ll find yourself walking on to Praia Grande. This beach is quieter than Praia da Armacao de Pera and there is also a small restaurant. Praia Grande is approximately 4km from Jardins de Pera and can be reached by road from Pera.

Praia dos Salgados

Head east again and you’ll come to Praia dos Salgados. Salgados beach covers a large area and has a variety of wooden walkways amongst the sand dunes. Beyond the dunes is Salgados Lagoon, where migrating birds stop over each year. It is also a breeding area for many protected species. The beach attracts surfers and body boarders as the sea regularly provides good waves. There is also a restaurant and parking available.

Beach Armacao de Pera

Praia da Gale

Lastly heading east again you finally reach Praia da Gale. It is relatively cliff free that is easily accessible. Praia da Gale beach is friendly to families, especially with children. The sands are fine and very soft and the waters are very clean and safe. Praia da Gale is approximately 7km from Jardins de Pera.

Holidays in Armacao de PeraYou can walk the whole length of sandy beach from Praia da Armacao de Pera to Praia da Gale and vice versa. After Praia da Gale there are some hidden coves surrounded by cliff walls until you reach the golden sandy beaches of Albufeira. There are too many beaches to mention but whatever kind of beach you are looking for, you can be assured that the Algarve has the “perfect” beach for you.

Praia do Manuel Lourenco – Gale

Surrounded by golden cliffs covered in aromatic vegetation, Manuel Lourenço beach is accessed from Galé. The air is rich with the fragrance of thyme and helichrysum and the sea is perfect for snorkelling through the submerged rocks. At low tide, it is possible to see a variety of marine life in various rock pools. The beach has a restaurant, showers and parking facilities. This is a blue flag rated beach.

Praia do Evaristo – Gale

Evaristo Beach is very small and huddled between truncated spurs of rock. The beach is named after the famous restaurant to be found here. Access is gained via the village of Galé and, if celebrity spotting is a favourite summer pastime, this is the beach for you as it attracts many of the famous faces that regularly crop up in Portuguese high society magazines. Gigantic rocks litter the sand and under the water, inviting snorkelers to view the underwater rocks, where the marine life is abundant. This is a Blue Flag beach with sunshade rental, showers, restaurant and parking.

Praia do Castelo

The picturesque sandy beach of Praia do Castelo nestles between imposing cliff walls and is full of hidden nooks and crannies. At the eastern end is a rock formation reminiscent of a gigantic castle, for which the beach is named. There is also a bar/restaurant with wonderful views overlooking the beach and ocean.

It’s not near the ocean, but there is plenty of sand. The International Sand Sculpture Festival (FIESA) is held in Pera annually from May to October. The exhibition has a different theme every year. This has to been seen to be believed!
